What is LMIA?

An LMIA is a document that certifies that a Canadian company tried to fill a position locally but was unsuccessful in doing so and is thus authorized to engage a foreign worker.

The IMP includes several work permit streams and programs, and you may be able to apply for permanent residence through one of these programs, a provincial program, or a federal economic program like the Canadian Experience Class, which is part of the Express Entry system.

In a two-step process known as the owner-operator work permit route, a first work permit acts as a springboard for obtaining permanent residence in Canada. The following steps are involved in the Owner-Operator LMIA route:

1. Set up a new business in Canada or purchase an existing one.

2. Apply for the Owner-Operator LMIA by creating a position as an employee of the company.

3. Get a work permit and begin working as an employee for your own company.

4. To become a permanent resident of Canada, submit an Express Entry application.
